T.J. grew up in South Central LA, and his mom encouraged him to get into music to avoid gang violence. Her encouragement helped him win a singing competition, where he had the opportunity to play with his biggest idol, Stevie Wonder. Now he wants make it on the national stage to help get his mom into a safer environment.
23-year-old T.J. Wilkins auditioned with and Elton John classic, "Bennie and the Jets", and was able to turn Adam's, Usher's, and Blake's chairs. Usher called him "creative", and said he "took it to a place nobody imagine it could've gone." Following these comments, T.J. chose to join Team Usher. He was paired against Biff Gore for the first Battles, singing The Temptations' "Ain't Too Proud to Beg". Usher commented that they "did everything perfect", and T.J. managed to advance to the second Battles on Team Usher.
